Overview

Sydney is the largest city in Australia, and the capital of the state of New South Wales. Sydney has a metropolitan population of 4.34 million and an area of 12,000 square kilometers. Its residents are called Sydneysiders, and Sydney has been nicknamed the “Harbor City”, the “Country City”, and the “Emerald City”.

Sydney is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, which is reflected in its role as a major destination for immigrants to Australia.

Sydney was founded in 1788 at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, commodore of the First Fleet. Situated on a bay in the Tasman Sea, Sydney is built on the low hills around Port Jackson. The city is home to the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge. The metropolitan area is surrounded by national parks, and has many bays, rivers and coves.
